Gorilla trekking is the heart of Uganda safaris that the activity puts on the world map. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the leading gorilla trekking destination in the country and holds the biggest population of mountain gorillas.

There are about 459 gorillas in the Bwindi, and the count has grown and the number has since grown due stable birth rates and strong conservation. The thrilling activity involves booking a permit first, waking up early the next day at the park headquarters, dive into the briefing then head into the forest with your guides and park rangers.

While tracking, the hikes can be stubborn, steep and muddy, and sometimes the process can take about 4 to 6 hrs. Once travelers find the family, they get one full hour with the gorillas. Watching a baby gorilla play or silverback chest beating is searching a heartwarming experience

Mgahinga National Park in the southwestern part of Uganda offers another gorilla trekking option, even though with fewer visitors and volcano views.

Kibale National Park is considered the top spot for chimpanzee tracking in Uganda. The spot homes over 1,500 individual chimps, making it one of the largest groups in the Region.

The easiest way to track and spot chimps in Kibale is simply following their calls through the dense trees, or watch them feed, as the swing from one tree branch to another. Other chimpanzee trekking spots include Budongo Forest right inside Uganda's oldest and outstanding national park Murchison Falls, and Kyambura Gorge in Queen Elizabeth national park.

The experience often feels more exciting than gorilla trekking due to the first movements of these primates.

For awesome experience, timing matters on the Uganda safaris. There are two dry seasons that give the best shot. The drier period of June to September and December to February is the best time best time to visit Uganda.

Both gorilla and chimp trekking becomes effortlessly, given that the roads are drier, easily accessible, and grass is shorter for game viewing. It's during this period that ildlife gathers near water sources, hence better sightings.

January to February plus June to mid August feels perfect for some travelers due to clear skies and fewer rain interruptions. March to May and October to November are wet months and bring lush greenery, prices are lower but trails get muddy and some camps may close. The wet season works for birders because migratory birds arrive.
